The managements of Melcom, Palace Mall and other Supermarkets in Accra have confirmed that the implementation of the new VAT has resulted in reduction of prices.
The new VAT, which was announced in the 2026 Budget presented by the Finance Minister in November 2025 on the floor of parliament started on January 1, 2026.
Some customers at the shops and supermarkets showed receipts reflecting the new VAT system to a team of Ghana Revenue Authority officials led by the Commissioner General, Anthony Sarpong.
The Head of Audit at Melcom, Sushil Jha told the Commissioner General that customers have begun enjoying some 1.9 percent reduction in prices of goods.
“We started the new rate since the beginning of the year and our customers are happy with it. We have seen a reduction of about 1.9 percent because there’s no COVID 19 levy and there is small reduction on the VAT. This is a happy news to our business and we are grateful to you Commissioner General and the government for this” he said.
On his part, the Head of Accounts at Palace Mall, Joshua Israel also disclosed that the new rate has been calibrated into the payment system and customers are benefiting from the reduced tax rate.
Mr Sarpong was accompanied by the Commissioner of Domestic Tax Revenue Division, Dr. Martin Yamborigya and some senior management staff of the Ghana Revenue Authority.
The team also visited Orca Deco on the Spintex Road where it was confirmed that most of the prices of the items have been reduced in compliance with the new rate.
Some customers also confirmed that there is no COVID 19 levy on their receipts.
