New nurses and teachers are not paid due to mismanagement of resources - Janet Nabla

Founder and Chairperson of the People’s National Party (PNP), Janet Asana Nabla, has blamed the government’s mismanagement of State resources for the delay in paying salaries of newly employed nurses and teachers.

Speaking on Joy Prime’s Prime Insight on Saturday, October 11, during discussions about the ongoing protest by aggrieved nurses and teachers, Madam Nabla criticised the government for failing to prioritise salary payments despite allocating huge sums of money to non-essential areas.

“Why should you employ someone for 11 months without payment?” she asked.

“We are using technology today, and yet we cannot pay people who have worked for nearly a year. Just put yourself in their shoes, many of us who receive our salaries at the end of the month still struggle, so imagine those who have worked for 11 months without pay.”

She said the hardship faced by nurses and teachers reflected a deeper issue of poor financial management by the current administration.

According to her, the government’s budget allocations show misplaced priorities, particularly at the Jubilee House, where large amounts are being spent without transparency.

“Just look at the budget they presented in Parliament, GH₵297 million for the Jubilee House. Where is that money going?” she questioned. “Do you know I’ve written a petition to EOCO to investigate Felix Kwakye Ofosu’s office over that money?”

Madam Nabla said that the huge sums being used to run government offices could have been redirected to clear salary arrears owed to public sector workers.

“The Ministry of Information used GH₵6 million to run six agencies, yet the government wants to use GH₵78 million for a department at the Jubilee House. What are they using that money for? These people could have been paid with that,” she said.

She further criticised the appointment of additional deputy ambassadors and other political positions, describing them as unnecessary expenditures that drain national resources.

“We must look at the budget again. Let’s cut down the unnecessary spending at the Jubilee House and scrap the deputy ambassadorial positions. When we do that, we can pay these nurses and teachers and even employ more,” she stated.
