AI Skills Africa has unveiled an ambitious fellowship programme aiming to reshape the continent’s economic landscape.

The AI Skills Fellowship, launching its first cohort on 2 August, represents one of the largest AI education initiatives in Africa’s history and a bold move to position Africa at the forefront of the global artificial intelligence revolution.

The eight-week hybrid programme, developed in partnership with FestMan Learning Hub, will train 10,000 African professionals and graduates in generative AI skills by 2026. This hybrid programme offers a structured learning pathway focused on AI fluency – the ability to use and apply artificial intelligence effectively, efficiently, safely, and ethically to deliver business value.

Through this initiative, participants will also develop an AI-first mindset, preparing them not only to adapt to the future of work but to shape it.

This undertaking comes as recent McKinsey research reveals that Africa could unlock up to $100 billion in annual economic value through strategic AI adoption.

The Fellowship features fully sponsored, expert-led sessions facilitated by senior professionals from Microsoft, Google, Bloomberg, and FestMan, offering participants direct access to cutting-edge insights from global technology leaders.

These sessions are embedded within a comprehensive curriculum that offers both foundational and advanced training in prompt engineering, the use of generative AI tools, and practical applications of AI in the workplace. Key areas of focus include AI-powered data analysis and presentations, automated workflows and AI agents, AI-driven research, content creation, and the development of applications and websites using AI technologies.

Participants will gain hands-on experience using widely adopted AI tools, including ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Notion AI, and others.

“Our vision is to democratise access to AI fluency skills and ensure that young Africans are empowered to lead innovation across sectors,” explained the CEO of FestMan Learning Hub.

“This Fellowship is a commitment to building not only technical capacity but also the confidence and creativity required to solve real-world problems using AI.”

The timing of this initiative aligns with compelling economic data. PwC research indicates that professionals with AI skills command up to a 56% wage premium, highlighting the growing value of AI literacy in today’s competitive job market.

The Fellowship represents just the opening phase of a comprehensive strategy to build Africa’s AI talent pipeline. Through a strategic partnership with FestMan and other leading educational platforms, AI Skills Africa will soon launch advanced certification programmes in AI Engineering and Data Engineering, providing internationally recognised credentials designed to accelerate career growth and strengthen Africa’s position in the global digital economy.

Applications for the AI Skills Fellowship are now open and highly competitive. Participation is fully funded, with only a minimal commitment fee required to secure a spot.
