Mahama Ayariga, the Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business in Parliament, has given the assurance that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) would use its majority in the House wisely and not abuse it.

“The National Democratic Congress, for the first time in a very long time, has two-thirds in this House. With this number, we can do many good things for this country

“And with this number, we can carry out significant constitutional reforms to make this country better,” Mr Ayariga added.

Mr Ayariga made the remarks after the swearing-in of the new Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North, Madam Ewurabena Aubynn, in Parliament on Tuesday.

Currently, the NDC has 184 seats with the four Independent parliamentary candidates in Parliament caucusing with the Majority NDC, bringing their numbers to 188, having a two-thirds majority to take decisions.

The Minority NPP has 87 seats now following the sudden demise of Ernest Yaw Kumi, the late Akwatia MP, on July 7, 2025, after a short illness.

Mr Ayariga remarked: “Ghanaians, today, have given us all the numbers that we need to reset Ghana. I want to assure Ghanaians that what President John Mahama said when he was being sworn-in still stands: the NDC will not abuse the majority given to it by Ghanaians; we will use it wisely.

“We will use it properly and we will make sure that this number inures to the benefit of Ghanaians”.

Earlier, Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, took Madam Ewurabena Aubynn, the MP-Elect for Ablekuma North, through the Oath of Office as a Member of Parliament and Oath of Allegiance.

Mr Bagbin also handed copies of the Parliamentary Standing Orders and the Constitution of Ghana to Madam Eeurabena Aubynn as tools for her work.

Mr Bagbin told the new MP that the people in Ablekuma North expected a lot from her to improve their lots, saying, “The people expect you to improve their lives. It is a trust, you don’t abuse it. You’ll go back to them again”.

Meanwhile, the Minority Caucus staged a walkout before the swearing-in of the new MP when the Speaker declined the Caucus’ call to make a preliminary statement.

Mr Frank Annor-Dompreh, the Minority Chief Caucus and MP for Nsawam Adoagyiri, sought the guidance of the Speaker to make a statement before the swearing-in, but it was disallowed.

During the re-run of 19 polling stations on July 11, the NPP’s parliamentary candidate, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, polled 33,881 votes while the NDC’s parliamentary candidate, Madam Ewurabena Aubyn garnered 34,090 votes to emerge victorious.
