Sofo Tanko Rashid Computer, Deputy National Director of Elections and IT for NDC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) says it is fully satisfied with the Speaker of Parliament’s ruling on the status of Kpandai MP, Matthew Nyindam.

This follows a clarification by Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, who explained that Mr Nyindam remains an active MP despite the Tamale High Court’s annulment of the 2024 Kpandai parliamentary election.

Addressing Parliament on Thursday, November 26, Speaker Bagbin noted that, under Court of Appeal rules, the filing of a notice of appeal automatically stays the High Court’s decision for seven days. Since the ruling was delivered on November 24, 2025, the stay remains in effect until December 1, 2025.

According to the Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the NDC, Rashid Tanko-Computer, the party is confident that Mr Nyindam will soon cease to be a Member of Parliament following the recent court ruling.

“As a party, we are satisfied with the ruling of the Right Honourable Speaker. I can assure you, we are satisfied with it. Matthew Nyindam has only four days to stay in Parliament. So why wouldn’t we be happy? We’re very clear in our minds that the gentleman is going to be a former MP. In fact, we have started counting,” he said in an interview on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Thursday.

He stressed that a mere notice of appeal from Mr Nyindam is not the same as an appeal, insisting that the timeline from the Speaker makes the situation even clearer.

“I’m happy my brother made justice to it today. The date they have given them shows they will move their motion on December 17. Nyindam will cease to be an MP by December 1, so 16 days after, he will be fighting his matter in court as a former MP,” he added.

He further indicated that the Electoral Commission is expected to act swiftly once the clerk of Parliament formally communicates the vacancy: “I’m sure on Tuesday they are going to make sure the clerk writes to the EC declaring the seat vacant because on December 1, as the Speaker has rightly put it, he ceases to be an MP.”

Background

The Tamale High Court, presided over by Justice Emmanuel Brew Plange, annulled the December 7, 2024, Kpandai parliamentary election following a petition filed by NDC candidate Daniel Nsala Wakpal.

Following the ruling, the Majority side in Parliament demanded that Mr Nyindam be prevented from participating in proceedings.

This call intensified after reports emerged that he was preparing to contribute to deliberations in the chamber.
