Award-winning actor John Dumelo says the race for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential position between John Mahama and Kojo Bonsu won’t be a tough one.

According to the former parliamentary aspirant for Ayawso West Wuogon constituency, delegates have already declared the former president as the winner of the flagbearer race.

“No, it can never be a hot race between John Mahama and Kojo Bonsu. I mean the former President is going to win hands down.

“What I want is that at least he’s going to win by over 95 per cent. That’s what the delegates are saying and that’s what my convictions are also saying.”

Speaking in an interview on JoyNews, Saturday, Mr Dumelo stressed that he doubt people may vote against the former president but he is optimistic Mr Mahama would get the highest vote cast in his constituency.

“…I doubt anybody would vote against the former president but of course, it’s a democracy, you would have people against him for their own reasons but I hope and pray that in Awayaso West Wuogon, the former president would get at least 95 per cent here.”

Commenting on Dr Kwabena Duffour’s withdrawal from the presidential race, the actor-turned-politician said he was not surprised to hear that.

On Friday, May 12, Dr Kwabena Duffour formally pulled out from the NDC’s upcoming flagbearership contest.

Addressing a presser, the former governor of the Bank of Ghana stated that his decision is based on his grievances with the processes surrounding the party’s upcoming primaries; especially the voters register.

He explained that the exercise has been marred by a lot of irregularities; a situation which has not been resolved by the leadership of the party.

In regard to this, John Dumelo said that it is democratic to see contestants pull out of the race during elections.

“Yes and no, I mean, in a democracy, you have contestants always pulling out at a point in time. Last four years, Kojo Bonsu pulled out during the race.

“This year you have one of them pulling out and then now you have Dr Duffour pulling out yesterday so it’s not surprising at all that he pulled out at the last minute,” he said.
