The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has emphasised the need for the Electoral Commission to draw lessons from the recently concluded District Level Elections and adequately prepare for the upcoming December 07, 2024, Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
Predictions of Economic Hardships
Addressing the press on the need for the EC to pick useful lessons from the recent exercise, Asiedu Nketia predicted a difficult 2024, citing economic hardships due to what he described as uninspiring policies in the 2024 Budget statement by the ruling NPP government.
He highlighted the negative impacts, such as increased taxes, economic mismanagement, and rising poverty levels that had pushed many Ghanaians into financial hardship.
Hope for Change
Despite the predicted challenges, Asiedu Nketia expressed hope as he announced the imminent exit of the non-performing NPP government from office and urged Ghanaians to see an opportunity for change in the upcoming elections.
He emphasised the experienced and visionary leadership of the NDC’s flag bearer, John Dramani Mahama.
District Level Election Results
Asiedu Nketia highlighted what he said was the success of the NDC in the recently held District Level Elections, showcasing regional breakdowns and providing insights into the party’s performance in traditionally strong NPP strongholds.
He also congratulated the elected Assembly members and promised that the NDC government would introduce allowances for them to enhance their work.
Concerns and Challenges
Expressing concerns about the upcoming elections, Asiedu Nketia raised three critical issues:
- No Indelible Ink: He strongly opposed the Electoral Commission’s decision not to use indelible ink during elections, emphasising its importance in preventing multiple voting and ensuring the integrity of the electoral process.
- Shortage of Ballot Papers: He highlighted instances of ballot paper shortages during the District Level Elections, urging collaboration to prevent such issues in the December polls.
- Insecurity and Voter Intimidation: The NDC chairman pointed out instances of violence and voter intimidation, urging security forces to remain professional and prevent a repeat of the 2020 election-related violence.
Call for Transparency and Collaboration
Asiedu Nketia called for the restoration of lost voter ID cards in flood-affected areas and emphasised the need for transparency in the electoral processes. He also urged the National Peace Council to facilitate the NDC’s return to the Interparty Advisory Committee (IPAC) for collaborative discussions.
He also emphasised the importance of addressing electoral challenges and ensuring fair, transparent, and secure elections in 2024, and called for the cooperation of all stakeholders, including the Electoral Commission, to safeguard Ghana’s democratic process.
