Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings became first lady in June 1979

The National House of Chiefs has paid a deeply respectful and historic tribute to the late former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, following her recent passing.

In a formal statement, the traditional leaders described her demise as a profound national loss, lauding her as a trailblazer, visionary, and tireless advocate for women’s empowerment whose impact transcended politics.

The statement, signed by Stephen Owusu, the Public Relations Officer, on behalf of the President of the House, confirmed that the entire nation is united in grief for a figure whose dedication extended far beyond her constitutional role.

A Legacy Defined by Courage and Compassion

The House of Chiefs collectively recognized Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings not only as a former First Lady but as a monumental figure in Ghana’s history of social justice.

The statement noted that Ghana mourns not only a former First Lady but also “a woman of courage, conviction, and compassion who dedicated her life to the service of others.”

The chiefs specifically highlighted the pivotal role she played in elevating the status of Ghanaian women through the 31st December Women’s Movement.

This organization, founded and led by her, is credited with transforming the social and economic fabric of numerous communities.

“Her tireless advocacy for women’s rights through the 31st December Women’s Movement, which transformed the lives of countless women and children by promoting education, healthcare, and economic independence,” the statement read.

The traditional rulers emphasized that her leadership was ahead of its time, shaping crucial national dialogue long before issues of gender equity gained global prominence.

“Her voice and leadership helped shape national conversations on gender equality, social justice, and inclusive development long before these became mainstream causes,” it stated.

Stateswoman, Wife, and Inspiration

Beyond her activism, the National House of Chiefs paid solemn tribute to her role as a devoted spouse to the late former President Jerry John Rawlings. Her partnership with the former Head of State was acknowledged as a cornerstone of her public life.

The statement commended her distinct public persona, which was defined by an admirable set of values:

“The House also paid tribute to her as a devoted wife and partner to the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, commending her grace, discipline, and deep sense of duty that earned her respect at home and abroad.”

In concluding their tribute, the traditional authority reiterated the significance of her loss to the national fabric.

“Ghana has indeed lost a remarkable mother, leader, and stateswoman whose legacy will continue to inspire generations to come,” the statement read.

The National House of Chiefs extended heartfelt condolences to the Rawlings family and all Ghanaians, assuring them of their prayers and support during this difficult period. The tribute concluded with a prayer for her soul: “May her gentle soul rest in perfect peace.”
