The 2024 Vice-Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (Napo), has revealed plans to step away from intense partisan politics for a period of personal reflection and technological retraining.
In a recent interview on Joy News, Dr. Prempeh stated he is prioritising mentoring, community engagement, and acquiring advanced skills, specifically a 20-day course in Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Dr. Prempeh, who also served as the Minister of Energy, is using the post-election period to focus on “different loves” following the defeat after partnering with former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to represent the NPP at the last presidential polls.
He emphasised the need for leaders to continuously upgrade their knowledge in a rapidly evolving world.
AI: The New Frontier of Governance
Dr. Prempeh articulated a strong belief in the transformative power of AI, underscoring its relevance for governance and daily life.
He framed AI not just as a passing trend but as a fundamental shift in human capability.
His decision to pursue specialised training—a 20-day intensive course in AI—highlights the growing recognition among Ghana’s top policymakers that technological literacy is crucial for national planning and economic development.
The global AI market is projected to reach over $1.8 trillion by 2030, and Ghana’s leadership must understand its integration into energy management, healthcare (where Dr. Prempeh previously served as minister), and public service delivery.
Period of Reflection and Community Focus
The former Vice-Presidential hopeful confirmed that his political focus has temporarily shifted from the campaign trail to more foundational activities.
“I’ve been doing a lot of stuff, actually. Political life, partisan life, has been interrupted, but I have different loves that I can now promote,” Dr. Prempeh explained.
He described his current phase as a “period of reflections, more engagement with the community and citizens, and learning new things”.
This strategic withdrawal into education and community work aligns with his long-held passion for youth development and knowledge acquisition, which he now intends to vigorously promote after the conclusion of the 2024 general elections.
