Ghanaian artiste Wendy Shay has opened up on how trolls about her personality nearly ended her music career.
Wendy, who described herself as the most bullied artiste in Ghana, told Adesope Shopsydoo on the Afrobeats Podcast that she faced a lot of antagonism from music lovers who thought she was living in the shadows of the late Ebony.
According to her, in the heat of the trolls, her mother asked her to quit music, leave Ghana and joined her in Germany, where she had earlier lived.
“My mum told me to quit and come back to Germany because it was crazy and it affected everyone in my family. Let me chip in this. Do you know that some of my relatives were even kinda shy to associate with me at that time,” she said.
But she said she understood her family’s actions the ridicule was huge for them to bear.
“Imagine they take your face and make you look like an old woman, and then they start trolling you and laughing at you, and they tell you that you are not talented enough. I mean it wad crazy. I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy, but that built me,” she said.
She however noted that even in all of that, she still has lovers that listen to her music. She has, since her entry into the music industry, won spurs in various aspects. She has won a number of awards at the 3Music Awards and the Ghana Music Awards.
In the meantime, Wendy’s song ‘It’s Too Late’ has gained rotation on various media platforms and topped music charts across the globe.
