At a solemn state funeral on Friday, August 15, where Ghana mourned eight patriots who died in the line of duty, including the late Defence Minister, Dr Omane Boamah, his mother, Madam Leticia Asante, delivered a moving tribute, calling her only son her “miracle” and “life’s greatest honour.”
“My Handsome King,” she began, “from the moment I first held you in my arms on December 26th, 1975, at Nkawkaw Holy Family Hospital, I knew my life had changed forever. You were not just my child, you were my miracle, my answered prayer, my only son, and my treasure in whom I am pleased.”
She recalled watching him grow “from a curious little boy with bright eyes into a man of wisdom, compassion, and unshakable integrity,” adding that “every step you took, I was there quietly cheering, praying, and believing in the greatness God placed in you.”
“Kofi, you have always been my pride and joy. I have seen you face challenges with courage, hold fast to your values even when it was not easy, and rise to serve others with humility. You never forgot the lessons I whispered into your heart: to walk with God, to speak the truth, and to stand for what is right.”
She spoke of his devotion to the Catholic faith, saying, “Your deep love for God’s work was admirable, always eager to be in the Parish and faithfully devoted to the Catholic faith.
“Though you could not become a Roman Father, you still fulfilled your childhood dream of serving God and mankind faithfully. This was evident in your leadership roles from childhood until your very last breath.”
“As a mother, I gave you my all, my prayers, my strength and my sleepless nights, yet you gave me far more in return. You gave me honour. You gave me comfort.
“You gave me the assurance that my life’s work in raising you was not in vain. The world may call you Dr. Omane Boamah, but to me, you were still that little boy who would run into my arms and call me ‘Sister Abena’ with so much love.”
Her voice softened as she offered her final farewell: “My heart overflows with gratitude to God for the privilege of being your mother. Dada Fii, tell God how grateful, lucky and privileged I feel that He chose me to be your mom, and I hope I made Him proud.
“I would perform this task all over again without hesitation. Sleep well, my son. Until we meet again in the presence of our Lord, you will remain forever in my heart. I hold you with my whole entire heart, my Kofi.”
