My exit cost Ghana a chance at CAF Presidency - Nyantakyi

Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kwesi Nyantakyi has revealed that he was well positioned to become president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) before leaving football administration in 2018.

Speaking on Joy News on Tuesday, January 6, Nyantakyi said his role as first vice president of CAF at the time made him the most senior official after the president, placing him firmly in line for the top job.

“It was very possible. At the time I exited CAF and football, I was the first vice president of the federation,” he said, adding that he was the “next most senior football official on the continent of Africa.”

According to Nyantakyi, his exit meant Ghana lost a rare opportunity to produce a CAF president, though he believes the door remains open for others in the future.

“So, Ghana would have had a CAF president. Although it is still possible… anybody who works hard can be the president,” he noted.
