Aflao Zongo Youth Caucus in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region has initiated a local campaign aimed at tackling the root causes of substance abuse and strengthening community responses to drug trafficking.

According to the youth group, the initiative is critical as the world prepares to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on 26th June under the theme “Advocate for Effective Policies.”

The initiative, dubbed “Zongos Against Drugs,” is focused on curbing the rapid spread of substance abuse, particularly in Zongo communities, and engaging parents and key stakeholders in the fight, with special attention on rising cases involving Red (a locally abused substance).

In collaboration with the Ghana Police Service in Aflao, the Youth Caucus has adopted a multifaceted approach, involving religious leaders, local authorities, and residents.

After earlier engagements with male leaders and Chief Imams, the group has now extended its advocacy to women and mothers, recognising their critical role in shaping the community.

In an interview, the leader of the Caucus, Abbas Mohammad, emphasised the importance of women in the campaign, “We are aware of the vital roles our mothers and sisters play in shaping society. After meeting with the men last week, we have now come to seek advice and support from our mothers in this fight. We cannot leave them out,” he said.

The Aflao District Police Commander, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Doreen Incoom, commended the youth for their bold initiative.

She urged women to be vigilant and proactive in observing their children for signs of drug use or behavioural changes, “Let us see this as a core responsibility. Together, we can secure a bright future for our children,” she said, adding that community members should report any suspicious ghettos for swift action and demolition.

The Paramount Chief Imam of Aflao Muslims, Imam Sariki Ahmed Ismail, also applauded the youth and encouraged residents to report individuals found establishing ghettos within the Zongo communities.

The campaign comes on the heels of a major police operation in Aflao, where twenty-six (26) individuals suspected of dealing in illegal drugs were arrested in various enclaves. Of those arrested, sixteen (16) have been remanded into police custody and are expected to reappear before court on 3rd June 2025.

Participants at the engagement pledged to collaborate with all relevant stakeholders, particularly the police, in a united effort to tackle the growing menace of drug abuse in the region.
