Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George

Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has accused MultiChoice, operators of DStv, of disrespecting President John Dramani Mahama’s handling of the Ghanaian economy.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Friday, August 1, Mr George condemned the company’s justification for its refusal to reduce subscription prices, describing it as “insulting and dishonest.”

According to the Minister, MultiChoice, in an official response to the Ministry, claimed it could not lower prices due to what it described as a 200% depreciation of the cedi over the past eight years.

“They went as far as suggesting that the gains made under President Mahama’s leadership are not real and describing it as a fluke. That’s deeply offensive,” Mr George said.

Mr George disclosed that he has since written to the National Communications Authority (NCA), directing it to take immediate steps towards suspending MultiChoice’s broadcasting licence. “

I have formally requested the NCA to review their operations and suspend their licence by August 7. We will not allow any entity to treat Ghanaians with contempt,” he asserted.

Emphasising his commitment to protecting consumers, Mr George added, “Ghanaians have endured exploitation from service providers for far too long. My loyalty lies with the people of Ghana, and I will ensure that no foreign company takes them for granted.”
