MTN staff in Western region urged to stay cyber vigilant during cybersecurity awareness month

The Senior Manager for MTN South West, Prince Owusu Nyarko, has urged employees to be proactive and vigilant in safeguarding their digital presence and company systems.

He made the call during a cybersecurity awareness and capacity-building session for staff in Takoradi, held as part of activities to mark Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2025 under the theme “Be Cyber Aware.”

Mr. Nyarko emphasised that every social media account created contributes to a person’s digital footprint, which can expose users to potential online threats.

He therefore advised employees to strengthen their digital hygiene by using strong passwords, enabling multi-factor authentication, and keeping their devices and software up to date.

“This month is dedicated to ensuring our people are aware of the threats out there when we are on the internet,” he said. “As an ICT-driven organization, it’s crucial that our staff, customers, and the business as a whole remain secure. Education is the best defense against cyber threats.”

He further urged staff not only to protect themselves but also to educate friends and loved ones about safe online practices, adding that the ripple effects of cyber threats often extend beyond the workplace.

‘Be Careful What You Click’

Maxwell Acquah, Acting Technical Manager for MTN Western Region, also cautioned the public to be wary of downloading free applications from unverified sources, as many of them can serve as gateways for malware and phishing attacks.

“There are always threats out there scammers and fraudsters are constantly innovating,” he said. “You need to protect yourself and your loved ones by using strong passwords and being cautious about what you click or download.”

He added that MTN regularly trains its employees to strengthen their resilience and preparedness against emerging cybersecurity risks.

“We organise quarterly and monthly training sessions for staff, and we also have an online portal that reinforces these lessons,” Mr. Acquah explained. “This continuous learning ensures our people stay ahead of evolving cyber threats.”

Some employees who took part in the session expressed appreciation for the training, describing it as both eye-opening and practical.

One participant said the event helped her understand how to be more alert online.

“Having the training here in person was very engaging and insightful. I learned to be more proactive and concise in dealing with cybersecurity issues,” she said.

Another participant shared a personal experience.

“I’ve been a victim of a WhatsApp hack before, but today’s session has enlightened me on how to avoid such mistakes in the future,” he noted.

The event forms part of MTN’s broader commitment to digital safety and data protection, equipping staff with the tools to protect not only the company’s systems but also their personal digital spaces.
