MTN Ghana has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to championing digital inclusion and female empowerment by supporting the National Girls in ICT Initiative with a staggering GHC 17.6 million investment this year.

The climax of the Volta Regional edition of the initiative was held at the Cedi Auditorium of the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) in Ho, graced by the Minister for Communications, Digitalisation, and Innovation.

Speaking at the event, the Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer of MTN Ghana, Madam Adwoa Wiafe, emphasised the strategic importance of equipping young girls, especially those from deprived communities, with digital skills that are essential for future employment and innovation.

“At MTN, we believe in inclusivity—girls, the differently abled, and all who deserve a chance. We are not just investing in words but in action. This year alone, GHC 2 million has gone into supporting the Volta edition, and GHC 17.6 million overall towards Girls in ICT across the country,” Madam Wiafe stated.

MTN Ghana, through its Foundation, has consistently partnered with the Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation to promote digital literacy and technology-driven education among girls.

According to Madam Wiafe, over 15,000 girls have been trained nationwide under the program, with laptops and training tools distributed not only to students but also to their teachers and trainers.

“We are proud of the impact. One girl from the 2019 cohort is now pursuing ICT at the university. This proves the transformation is real and tangible,” she shared.

The program has also incorporated inclusive digital training for differently-abled girls, reinforcing MTN’s broader commitment to equal opportunities in the digital age.

As part of its broader mission to lead digital solutions for Africa’s progress, MTN Ghana has built ICT labs and libraries in secondary schools across Ghana, supplied state-of-the-art robotics centers, including one at Mamfe Girls SHS, whose students won the World Robotics Competition for two consecutive years, sponsored scholarship schemes for girls in STEM and partnered with universities to integrate ICT into their core curricula.

Last year alone, MTN supported over 30 schools with advanced ICT facilities.

“We want to make sure every Ghanaian child, especially girls, can access hands-on, practical ICT education. The future belongs to those with digital skills. It’s not a luxury anymore—it’s a necessity,” Madam Wiafe added passionately.

The Volta Region event is the first of three regional Girls in ICT events planned for this year, with upcoming editions set to take place in the Upper East and Upper West regions. MTN Ghana has pledged to continue its collaboration with the Ministry to expand the reach and deepen the impact of the initiative.

In her closing remarks, Madam Wiafe reiterated MTN Ghana’s belief that Africa is poised for greatness through digital innovation, and Ghanaian girls must be part of that story.

“Our CEO always says the next big thing must come from Africa. We’re here to help make that happen—by providing the skills, the tools, and the platform.”

The National Girls in ICT initiative continues to inspire a new generation of female digital leaders, with MTN Ghana at the forefront of this transformational journey.
