MTN announces airtime and data sales blackout for January 2 in preparation for new VAT tariffs

As the nation navigates the first week of 2026, telecommunications giant MTN Ghana is preparing for a critical technical overhaul to align its digital infrastructure with the government’s latest fiscal directives.

The company has issued a formal advisory to its millions of subscribers, announcing a temporary but essential service interruption scheduled for Friday, January 2, 2026.

The downtime is a direct response to the implementation of the new National Value Added Tax (VAT) Reform Tariffs, which will recalibrate the pricing structures of telecommunications services nationwide.

The Midnight Maintenance Window

To ensure a seamless transition to the revised tax regime, MTN’s technical teams will conduct a system-wide update during the early hours of Friday. The window is strategically timed to minimise daytime economic disruption.

“There is a scheduled maintenance planned for January 2, 2026, from 12:00 am to 04:00 am in preparation for the new VAT reform tariffs,” the company stated in a public announcement.

During this four-hour period, the platforms responsible for processing retail transactions will be offline.

The company was explicit about the limitations users will face: “During this period, airtime and data bundle purchases will not be possible.”

The suspension of services will hit all digital and physical recharge channels, including:

  • *Mobile Money (170#) Top-ups
  • myMTN App Purchases
  • Electronic Voucher Distributors (EVD)
  • Third-party Banking Apps

While the advisory focused on the inability to purchase new airtime or data, it did not explicitly state that existing data bundles or active voice calls would be cut off.

However, users are cautioned that real-time balance updates and “Mashup” renewals will likely be frozen until the systems are restored at 4:00 am.

The VAT Reform is part of a broader government effort to streamline revenue collection and adjust the consumption tax on digital services.

For a market leader like MTN, these proactive system updates are mandatory to avoid billing discrepancies that could result from the old tax rates overlapping with the new legal requirements.

The update ensures that by daybreak on January 2, every cedi spent on the network correctly accounts for the revised statutory levies.

Recognising the inconvenience for night-shift workers, travellers, and early-morning commuters, the company offered a note of appreciation to its user base for their patience.

Subscriber Action Plan

To ensure you stay connected throughout the maintenance window, the following steps are recommended:

  1. Advance Purchase: Buy your required airtime and data bundles before 11:30 pm on Thursday, January 1.
  2. Check Balances: Ensure you have enough active data to last until at least 5:00 am on Friday.
  3. Alert Family: If you have dependants who rely on you for emergency top-ups, handle those transactions before the midnight deadline.
