The Member of Parliament for Sefwi Bodi, Mr Samson Ahi, has made a solemn pledge that a future National Democratic Congress (NDC) government will not just revive, but restore the cocoa sector to its former glory, demonstrating our unwavering commitment to this vital industry.
Speaking at Elluokrom in the Bia West Constituency during the Western North Regional campaign tour of NDC’s vice presidential candidate, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Mr Ahi criticized the current government for inadequately compensating cocoa farmers. He claimed that the producer prices offered to farmers are significantly lower than prevailing global market rates.
Mr Ahi emphasized that during the tenure of former President John Mahama, cocoa farmers received 70 percent of the world market price as their producer price, alongside additional benefits such as free fertilizers, cocoa roads, and various incentives like subsidized healthcare and education for their children.
He assured cocoa farmers that a future NDC government would not just guarantee fair and equitable producer prices, but also reinstate the free fertilizer program, a beacon of hope for our farmers, and provide improved seedlings to enhance cocoa yield, providing a secure future for our farmers.
Mr Ahi also proposed introducing a comprehensive pension scheme for cocoa farmers, a measure that will provide them with a sense of security in their retirement years.
He urged voters with conviction to elect NDC presidential candidate Mr. John Dramani Mahama in the upcoming December 7 general elections to facilitate the revival of the cocoa sector and safeguard the Ghana Cocoa Board from potential collapse, inspiring them to be part of this crucial change.
