The youth of Moree, a fishing settlement in the Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese District of the Central Region, have blamed political interference and inadequate police presence for hindering development in their community. They appealed to President John Dramani Mahama and Inspector General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno during a peaceful protest dubbed the *Moree Youth Red Wednesday Demonstration*. Hundreds of young people, dressed in red to signify urgency, marched from the Moree market to the Community Centre, where leaders addressed the crowd.
Chairman of the Moree Youth Association, Papa Fynn Junior, lamented that despite Moree’s 500-year history and population of over 40,000, progress has stalled due to disputes over succession to the late Nana Adzekese X. He pointed to neglected infrastructure such as the landing site, sea defense, and streets, noting that similar fishing harbors in James Town and Elmina have transformed lives. He explained that the absence of a recognized chief for over two decades prevented the celebration of the annual Abangye Festival, though a new chief, Nana Adzekese XI, has since been gazetted. However, he alleged that selfish individuals and political interference have blocked the chief from performing his duties.

Fynn accused the local MP, Felix Ofosu Kwakye, of undermining the chief, citing incidents where the MP discouraged traditional rites and walked out of a durbar before the chief’s address. Andrew Kweku Aikins added that some NDC supporters pressured the MP not to recognize Nana Adzekese XI, despite previously seeking his blessing before the 2024 elections. He warned that such hostility threatens development and even the position of the District Chief Executive, Daniel Mensah Waldy, who faces backlash for acknowledging the chief.
The youth also criticized the police for labeling Moree a violent zone, which they said discourages development projects and festival celebrations. They stressed that the town is peaceful but inadequately protected, with only eight officers serving over 40,000 residents. They urged the IGP to increase police presence and called on natives abroad to return for this year’s Abangye Festival.
Justice John Awotwe, Secretary of the Youth Association, condemned factions within the NDC and the Kwana Royal family for refusing to recognize the gazetted chief, arguing that such divisions stall progress. He appealed for unity, stressing that development requires cooperation between the MP, the chief, and the traditional council. He also dismissed rumors that the youth association is aligned with the NPP, insisting their focus is solely on community progress.

Other members, including Felix Otoo, Elizabeth Bosomtwe, and Nana Araba Awotwe, echoed calls for peace and collaboration, urging all factions to set aside differences so Moree can regain its lost glory.
