Domestic airline PassionAir has confirmed that its flight OP122, which was en route from Accra to Takoradi on Saturday, May 31, 2025, returned to Kotoka International Airport shortly after takeoff.
However, the airline has dismissed claims circulating on social media that the incident was due to a fuel shortage.
The aircraft was scheduled for a takeoff at 6:20 AM and arrived at Takoradi at 7:15 AM.
An official from PassionAir, speaking to JoyNews, clarified that the aircraft experienced a technical issue shortly after departure, prompting the crew to return to Accra as a safety precaution. She, however, did not specify the nature of the technical fault but stressed that it was unrelated to fuel supply.
This comes after a passenger aboard the flight took to social media, alleging that the aircraft was forced to return mid-air due to insufficient fuel. The post, which has since gained significant attention on X (formerly Twitter), claimed passengers were informed of the fuel issue only after landing.
“We boarded at 6:20 am, took off, and barely 15 minutes later, they told us we had to return to Accra. No explanation until we landed — then they said there wasn’t enough fuel to get to Takoradi,” the user wrote.
