The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) has launched a Network of Investigative and Public Interest Journalists (NIPIJ).

The network, according to the foundation, is a regional initiative aimed at enhancing collaboration, safety, and professionalism among journalists across West Africa. The launch, held in Accra on Tuesday, March 17, also featured virtual participation from journalists in other West African countries.

According to MFWA’s Programme Manager, Media for Democracy and Good Governance Programme, Adizatu Moro Maiga, the NIPIJ has been established to provide a professional platform for investigative and public interest journalists to work collectively on issues that transcend national boundaries, such as corruption, illicit financial flows, human rights violations, environmental crimes, and governance failures.

The initiative is supported by DW Akademie and comes at a time when the region faces growing democratic backsliding, rising insecurity, and increasing pressures on civic actors, including journalists, she said.

In his address, Director for Media for Democracy and Good Governance of the MFWA, Dr Kojo Impraim, highlighted the critical role of investigative journalism in strengthening democratic governance, promoting transparency, and holding public institutions accountable.

He believes that West Africa has a proud tradition of independent journalism and civic engagement, but journalists today face intimidation, arbitrary arrests, cyber harassment, and physical attacks while investigating corruption, governance failures, and human rights abuses.

NIPIJ will provide mechanisms for peer learning, cross-border investigations, mentorship, resource sharing, and professional support systems designed to enhance journalists’ safety, security, and professional capacity.

In her keynote address, the Chairperson of the National Media Commission, Professor Akua Opokua Britwum, elaborated on the evolution of media in the country, offering words of caution, guidance, and encouragement to journalists.

She also lamented the poor remuneration of journalists in the country, noting that, in many cases, it compelled them to compromise their integrity.

She welcomed the initiative and expressed her belief that it would contribute significantly to advancing the country’s quest for accountability and developmental transformation.

Key objectives of the Network include:

  • Building a strong regional network of investigative and public interest journalists;
  • Enhancing the safety and security of journalists through collective protection mechanisms and training;
  • Promoting collaboration on cross-border investigations and reporting;
  • Improving access to resources, tools, data, and professional development opportunities;
  • Advancing ethical standards and professionalism in investigative and public interest journalism.

According to Adizatu, members of NIPIJ will benefit from virtual learning sessions, experience-sharing platforms, training, and mentorship opportunities, enabling journalists to sharpen their skills, share best practices, and strengthen regional cooperation.

By connecting journalists across Anglophone, Francophone, and Lusophone communities, NIPIJ seeks to amplify citizens’ voices, protect press freedom, and promote informed civic participation throughout West Africa.

Through this initiative, the MFWA hopes to strengthen the capacity of journalists to pursue impactful investigations, foster regional collaboration, and ensure that public interest journalism continues to hold power to account in a rapidly changing media landscape.
