The Chairman of the 150th Anniversary Planning Committee of Mfantsipim School, Captain John B. Yamoah, has called for strong financial and institutional backing to restore the school’s ageing infrastructure as celebrations marking its sesquicentennial gather momentum.

Speaking at the launch of the school’s official anniversary cloth and songs at the World Trade Centre Accra on Friday, March 20, Captain Yamoah framed the 150-year milestone not merely as a school anniversary but as a landmark in Ghana’s educational history.

“This celebration is therefore not only about our school. It is a moment of national significance, representing a century and a half of structured secondary education and its transformative impact on our country,” he told a packed audience of alumni, students, church leaders, corporate executives and government representatives.

Founded in 1876 by the Methodist Church, Ghana, Mfantsipim, affectionately known as “Kwabotwe”, is widely regarded as the pioneer of secondary education in the Gold Coast and has produced many of Ghana’s most influential leaders across politics, academia, business and public service.

Celebration with a purpose

While the ceremony showcased colourful commemorative cloth and newly composed anniversary music, the planning committee chairman emphasised that the festivities are designed to drive tangible development outcomes for the historic institution.

He revealed that several of the school’s facilities, including dormitories, classrooms and sanitation blocks, are in a deteriorating state and require urgent rehabilitation.

“For those of you who were at the annual general meeting, you had the opportunity to see the state of the dormitories, the ablutions and the classrooms. This is an issue that we need to address, and we need money to be able to undertake this project,” he said, urging alumni and corporate partners to contribute generously.

The anniversary programme therefore combines commemorative events with fundraising initiatives, policy dialogues on education and community outreach activities aimed at shaping the future of schooling in Ghana.

Cloth and music as living symbols

Captain Yamoah described the anniversary cloth and songs as enduring cultural artefacts rather than mere ceremonial items, explaining that in Ghanaian tradition both cloth and music serve as carriers of history, identity and collective memory.

“These are not merely ceremonial elements. They are enduring creative expressions of identity and legacy,” he said.

“Through their designs, colours, rhythms and lyrics, they tell stories, preserve heritage and unify communities across generations.”

Two cloth designs were unveiled, including one produced in black and red variations symbolising heritage, resilience and institutional pride, as well as a white version representing gratitude to God for the school’s longevity.

The musical component consists of a formal choral piece designated as the official anniversary anthem and a lively Jama song reflecting the spirited traditions of the school’s student culture.

According to the chairman, both the cloth and songs were selected through nationwide competitions advertised across major print and digital platforms, with submissions evaluated by creative experts to ensure they reflect the school’s prestige and aspirations.

A legacy beyond the campus

Captain Yamoah underscored that Mfantsipim’s impact extends far beyond its Cape Coast campus, positioning the anniversary as a national moment of reflection on education’s role in shaping leadership and development.

He noted that the institution’s 150-year history mirrors the broader story of secondary education in Ghana and its contribution to producing generations of nation builders.

“These creative symbols transform the sesquicentennial into a living legacy — one that honours 150 years and reflects on the broader story of secondary education in Ghana and its role in shaping generations of leaders,” he said.

Broad stakeholder backing

The committee expressed gratitude to key partners, including the Ghana Education Service, the Methodist Church, Ghana, and the Mfantsipim Old Boys Association for their continued support.

Captain Yamoah invited all who share in the Mfantsipim heritage, alumni, parents, students and friends, to help make the anniversary not only memorable but transformative.

“As we outdoor these symbols tonight, we do so with gratitude for the past, pride in the present and hope for the future,” he said.

Year-long celebrations ahead

The launch marks the second major activity in what is expected to be a year-long programme culminating in grand national events later in 2026.

For many attendees, the evening was as much about nostalgia as it was about renewal — a reminder that preserving one of the country’s most storied educational institutions requires collective effort.

As Captain Yamoah concluded, the anniversary is both a celebration of a distinguished past and a call to secure the school’s future for generations yet to come.
