Martin Kpebu dismisses claims he seeks to become Special Prosecutor

Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has rejected suggestions that he is positioning himself to take over as Special Prosecutor, describing the claims as baseless and “laughable”.

He said such speculation is misplaced and ignores the broader issues he has raised about leadership and accountability within the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

Speaking in an interview, Mr Kpebu said he has no interest in assuming the role currently held by Kissi Agyebeng, insisting that doing so would create troubling public perceptions given his recent criticism of the OSP.

“No, it is a laughable claim. You see, I am laughing,” he said, responding to rumours about his intentions.

He argued that taking up the position after leading a strong public campaign against the current Special Prosecutor would undermine public confidence in his motives.

“I am not interested in becoming the Special Prosecutor especially after leading this charge, and the optics will look bad,” he stressed.

According to him, his advocacy is driven by principle, not personal ambition.

Mr Kpebu, however, acknowledged that he is likely to serve the country in some form of public office in the future, but maintained that the OSP is not among the roles he would consider.

“It is clear that I will go into public service at some point, but not the Special Prosecutor,” he stated. He added that such a role would not align with his long-term aspirations.

He reiterated that his recent actions and comments are motivated by his belief in strengthening state institutions and promoting accountability.

He said Ghanaians must focus on ensuring the OSP operates effectively rather than speculating about individuals who may or may not take over the office.
