Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has strongly rejected claims by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) that he verbally abused its officers during his recent visit to the institution.
Speaking on Newsfile on Saturday, December 6, Kpebu described the allegations as “complete fabrications” aimed at discrediting him following his criticisms of the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng.
Kpebu, who was arrested and later released earlier in the week, insisted that at no point did he mistreat or insult any officer at the OSP.
He maintained that he conducted himself professionally throughout his engagements and that the narrative being pushed by the OSP is part of a broader attempt to paint him as unruly.
According to him, the office is seeking to shift public attention away from what he calls its “procedural failures and incompetence”.
He recounted that his detention was unjustified, noting that he had visited the OSP voluntarily to assist with investigations into allegations he had levelled against the Special Prosecutor.
Instead of being received appropriately, he said he was confronted by officers and subsequently detained without cause.
Mr Kpebu argued that such treatment reflects poorly on the institution and raises questions about its adherence to due process.
The lawyer added that he finds it worrying that a state investigative body would resort to what he considers deliberate misinformation to defend its actions.
He emphasised that public institutions must operate with integrity, and that attempts to tarnish his image would not deter him from demanding accountability from the OSP.
“I am not an abusive person, and I never abused anyone. The soldier rather abused me, and I replied to him. I needed to respond to that unrepentant soldier. I had to stand for my right.”
The private legal practitioner further noted that he remains committed to pursuing a formal petition for the removal of the Special Prosecutor.
Mr Kpebu concluded by reiterating that the OSP’s statements do not reflect the events as they occurred and urged the public to scrutinise the office’s conduct.
He reaffirmed his readiness to provide evidence to support all the claims he has made and stated that the current development strengthens his resolve to seek reforms within the OSP.
