Kings Orange Flavoured Liqueur and Jupiter 1990 contain ‘wee’; unsafe for consumption – FDA warns

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has issued a strong public warning against two alcoholic products, Kings Orange Flavoured Liqueur and Jupiter 1990, declaring them unsafe for consumption.

In a statement released on Sunday, 18th May, the FDA revealed that both drinks are unregistered and have tested positive for marijuana (cannabis) extracts. They are suspected to be illegally manufactured by FAMUDE Catering Services, located in the Ashanti Region.

“Kings Orange Flavoured Liqueur was originally registered with the FDA in 2022. However, in July 2023, routine checks and laboratory tests found traces of marijuana in the drink,” the statement said.

As a result, the FDA shut down FAMUDE’s facility, revoked its license, and referred the case to the Suntresu District Police for further action.

Despite these measures, the FDA said it continued to monitor the situation with the support of the Ghana Police Service’s Drug Law Enforcement Unit (DLEU) and the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC).

In April 2025, the Authority received intelligence that Kings Orange Flavoured Liqueur was still being sold in Koforidua. Investigations led to the discovery of a new, unlicensed production site.

“On 30th April 2025, a joint team from the FDA, NACOC, and the DLEU raided the illegal site at Jachie Abidjan Nkwanta. They found bags and parcels of dried marijuana, labels of Kings Orange Flavoured Liqueur, and another unregistered product called Jupiter 1990,” the FDA disclosed.

Laboratory tests confirmed that both drinks contained marijuana extracts. All seized items were handed over to the police to support ongoing investigations.

“These products, Kings Orange Flavoured Liqueur and Jupiter 1990, are suspected to have been secretly produced and mixed with marijuana. They are therefore unsafe for consumption,” the FDA warned.

The Authority has advised all retailers and wholesalers to stop selling the drinks immediately and return any remaining stock to the nearest FDA office. It also urged the public to avoid buying or consuming these drinks altogether.

“Consuming such unsafe alcoholic drinks can seriously harm your health, including causing permanent damage to organs like the liver and kidneys,” the FDA cautioned.

The FDA reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding public health and ensuring that all food and beverage products on the market are safe, well-regulated, and of high quality.

For any enquiries or to report sightings of the products, the public is encouraged to contact the FDA through its official channels.
