Mancell Girls Senior High Technical School (SHTS) in Kumasi has announced plans to introduce biomedical and engineering courses, aiming to address the ongoing gender gap in these fields.

The Headmistress, Mrs Donkor revealed this initiative during the World Engineering Day programme organised by the Technology Consultancy Centre (TCC) at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

The event, held under the theme: “Shaping a Sustainable Future: Inspiring Engineering Careers in Senior High School Students,” focused on encouraging young women to pursue careers in traditionally male-dominated sectors.

“We aim to bridge the gender gap in engineering and biomedical sciences by encouraging more young women to pursue careers in these fields. Our goal is to provide practical, hands-on training that will prepare them for real-world applications in health, infrastructure, and technology,” she said.

The new programmes will emphasise practical skills, designed to equip students with the expertise necessary for immediate impact in the industry. The school intends to cultivate not just learners, but future innovators and leaders.

“Our goal is to foster innovation and leadership, ensuring our students are not only learners but also future problem-solvers and industry leaders,” she emphasized.

This initiative aligns with Mancell Girls SHTS´s broader vision to become a leading institution in technical and STEM education, empowering young women with the skills necessary for innovation and global impact.

Mrs Donkor also called on stakeholders to collaborate with the school in making it a hub of excellence in technical and STEM education, aiming to make women not just participants in engineering, but leaders in the field.

Mr. Maxwell Agyemang-Yeboah, Director of Administration at TCC, representing the Director-General, reaffirmed the centre´s commitment to supporting innovative minds in problem-solving.

“At TCC, we firmly believe that the future of engineers and society depends on the young minds we inspire today. This is why we are here, to show you that the future is in your hands, and it is yours to shape. We commit to making engineering real, laying the foundation for a sustainable and prosperous future,” he said.

He added, “The choice you have made to pursue STEM is the right one. You have chosen the path of problem-solvers, creators, and visionaries, the architects of the future who will design solutions, build technologies, and drive innovations that will transform the world”.

The KNUST TCC Centre for Innovation, Manufacturing, and Technology Transfer (TCC-CIMET) is a UNESCO Category II Centre of Excellence. It conducts engineering research, specializes in advanced manufacturing, transfers technology, trains entrepreneurs, and supports small and medium-scale industries in Ghana.

During the event, students at Mancell Girls SHTS were also given hands-on demonstrations of engineering concepts and the Internet of Things (IoT), further enhancing their exposure to the world of technology and engineering.
