Uncertainties have been stirred at the Ghana Airports Company Limited as the Divisional Union of PSWU has accused the Managing Director of GACL, Mr. Yaw Kwakwa of being a dictator, outsourcing contracts, and an inability to pay outstanding debts to workers.
The GACL divisional union of PSWU led by its chairman, Abdul Issaka Bamba on February 26, 2021, petitioned for Mr. Yaw Kwakwa to be dismissed from office as he was blamed for disregarding the welfare matters of staff resulting in several outstanding payments. He was also said to have given contracts to outside suppliers at exorbitant prices when in-house capacity could be utilized
These allegations flooding the doors of the MD’S office have been discredited by some concerned staff members of the GACL and have taken the position of a spoken person in favour of him
The concerned staff led by Mr. Eric Yeboah disclosed that the accusations by the divisional union against Mr. Yaw Kwakwa were politically motivated as they are aware of how some of their leaders were employed
“We are not surprised at what the Division Union is doing. Their action is politically motivated. However, we want to send a message to them that once they have chosen to pursue their master’s bid, we will not allow that because we know that Mr. Kwakwa has brought a lot of transformation to the GACL, and we will not sit aloof for all these gains to be derailed. We are going to resist all these actions and stand solidly before Mr. Kwakwa”
The concerned staff went on to reveal that Mr. Kwakwa was very diligent in providing medical care, a safe working environment, provision of PPES, and supervised the observation of COVID-19 protocols
They further explained that Mr. Kwakwa is not a dictator as he was described but “operates an open door policy whereby any staff is free and able to access his office”.
In regards, to outsourcing, the group was of the view that it was in line with the best industry practices as most aspects of the organization that is not directly related to the aviation industry are usually outsourced.

They also disclosed that it is under the leadership of Mr. Kwakwa in 2019 that the Kotoka International Airport was adjudged Africa’s best airport by size and region with a passenger population of between two and five million. The terminal three of the KIA, which serves regional, international, and long-haul operators also emerged as Africa’s most improved airport in the year under review
In conclusion, the fan base also the staff of the GACL is asking for the accusations made against Mr. Kwakwa by the divisional union to be disregarded and that he should be retained in office as the Managing Director of Ghana Airports Company limited
