Man allegedly assaulted after insulting Asantehene in viral video

A video in which a man identified as Mustapha hurls insults at the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has sparked outrage and resulted in an alleged physical assault on the perpetrator.

The incident, which has gone viral across social media platforms, underscores the deep reverence accorded to the Asantehene and the swift consequences of perceived disrespect.

In the initial video, Mustapha openly ridiculed the Asantehene’s call for residents within the Ashanti jurisdiction to observe an early curfew.

He declared that “only fools will obey and sleep early,” a statement that quickly drew widespread condemnation from the public.

The comments were seen as both disrespectful to the monarch and a direct challenge to the traditional authority of the Ashanti monarch.

The Asantehene’s directive was part of a larger security measure issued by the Manhyia Palace to ensure public safety and order, particularly in Kumasi and its environs.

The order had been well-received by the majority of residents, who view it as a necessary step to curb crime and maintain peace.

However, the situation took a dramatic turn when reports began circulating that Mustapha had been physically assaulted by unknown individuals in what appeared to be swift retribution for his comments.

Hours after the initial video went viral, a new video appeared on his social media page. In the new footage, a visibly shaken Mustapha recanted his earlier statements and offered a profuse apology.

The incident highlights the powerful role of traditional leadership in Ghana and the potential dangers of using social media to disrespect cultural figures. It also serves as a warning against vigilantism and a reminder that traditional sanctions can sometimes be imposed outside of formal legal processes.
