Eric Amoah

A Circuit Court in Cape Coast has sentenced a 26-year-old man, Eric Amoah, to 16 years’ imprisonment with hard labour after he pleaded guilty to defiling a 7-year-old boy in Mankesim.

The sentence, delivered by Her Honour Nana Aba Quaiba Nunoo on Thursday, November 6, brings partial closure to the horrifying incident that occurred in broad daylight in the Nananom suburb of Mankesim, located in the Mfanteman Municipality.

Facts of the Case and Sentencing

With the assistance of the victim’s father, Amoah was tracked down and arrested on November 3, 2025, and detained for investigation.

Prosecutor Chief Inspector Siman Sartey presented the evidence to the court, confirming that the suspect, Eric Amoah, was formally charged with defilement.

Crucially, Amoah entered a guilty plea on his own accord, leading to the immediate imposition of the 16-year sentence.

The boy has since been sent to the Saltpond Municipal Hospital, where he is responding to treatment.

The sentence is consistent with the severity of sexual offences against minors under Ghanaian law.

According to Section 101(2) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), defilement—defined as natural or unnatural carnal knowledge of a child under 16 years of age—is a first-degree felony that carries a minimum prison term of not less than seven years and a maximum of not more than 25 years.

The 16-year sentence falls within this legal range, reflecting the gravity of the crime committed against a child barely seven years old.

The swiftness of the judicial process was a relief to the victim’s family. The victim’s father, Francis Takyi, spoke exclusively to Adom News, recounting the moment he received the shocking news about the assault on his child.

The incident underscores a tragic reality across Ghana.

While comprehensive national data on child sexual abuse remains challenging to compile, figures from the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) and other studies confirm that male children are also victims of sexual assault, often perpetrated by non-strangers like neighbours, as confirmed by national-level studies.

The conviction serves as a strong deterrence against child sexual abuse, particularly in the Central Region, which has historically been cited in various studies for having high reported cases of sexual offences against children.
