Mamprugu Youth Association demands apology from Kennedy Agyapong, Kwasi Kwarteng over reckless Bawku comments

The Mamprugu Youth Association (MAYA), Bawku Chapter, has condemned NPP flagbearer aspirant Kennedy Agyapong and his spokesperson, Kwasi Kwarteng, over comments against former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

The two were accused of alleging that Dr. Bawumia imposed a rival chief on the Bawku community during the contentious 2024 election period.

In a statement released on September 5, 2025, the association described the comments as “reckless, malicious, and dangerous,” warning that such accusations could further exacerbate the already tense chieftaincy disputes in the region.

The Bawku area has long been a flashpoint for conflicts over traditional leadership, and the group fears that these statements could ignite further unrest.

MAYA highlighted that the allegations against Dr. Bawumia originated from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) during the 2024 election campaign.

They criticised Agyapong and Kwarteng for “shamelessly recycling” this narrative, which they believe undermines the peace efforts initiated by local leaders and community members.

“It is disgraceful that Mr. Kennedy Agyapong and his spokesperson, who claimed to support the NPP candidate in that election, are now resurrecting the same propaganda,” the association’s statement read, emphasizing the need for integrity in political discourse.

The Bawku chieftaincy conflict has deep roots, fueled by ethnic tensions and competing claims to traditional authority. It has led to violence and instability in the area, affecting local governance and community relations.

According to a 2023 report by the National Peace Council, over 200 people have lost their lives in chieftaincy-related clashes in the Bawku area over the last decade.

MAYA asserted that exploiting such sensitive issues for political gain is not only unethical but also a direct affront to the people of Bawku and the larger Mamprugu Kingdom.

They expressed their commitment to preserving peace in the community, stating, “We will not allow any individual, no matter how highly placed, to trade the peace of Bawku for political expediency. The future of our people is far more important than the desperation of politicians.”

The association has demanded a full and unequivocal apology from Agyapong and his team, warning that failure to retract the statements could lead to serious repercussions. They stated they would declare Agyapong’s campaign team persona non grata in the region if their demands are not met.

Seidu Awudu, President of the Bawku Chapter of MAYA, and Abdul Majeed Bagura, Secretary, jointly signed the statement, reinforcing their resolve to protect the community from divisive rhetoric.

The call for accountability comes at a crucial time as the nation approaches the 2024 general elections, with leaders urged to prioritize unity and peace over partisan politics.

As the situation develops, the Mamprugu Youth Association remains vigilant, advocating for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing chieftaincy disputes and hoping for a more respectful political environment.
