Samuel Nartey George

The Majority Caucus on Parliament’s Communications and Information Committee has dismissed demands from the Minority for Communications Minister Sam George to resign or be dismissed by President Mahama over the ongoing controversy surrounding DStv subscription prices.

Addressing the press in Parliament on Friday, the Member of Parliament for Tain and a member of the committee, Sulemana Adama, described the Minority’s claims as baseless.

“As members of the Majority Caucus of the Communications Committee, we recognise the Minority’s concerns. We, however, emphatically disagree with their position and their call for the removal of the Minister responsible for Communication,” Mr Adama said.

He argued that the minister had acted lawfully in his dealings with MultiChoice, operators of DStv, and had provided the leadership needed to stabilise the sector.

“In their statement, Mr Owiredu sought to create the impression that there are serious irregularities with the arrangement the Minister reached with MultiChoice. The Majority wishes to place on record that these assertions are wholly unfounded and do not reflect the facts on the ground. There is nothing irregular about the Minister’s engagement with MultiChoice, and there is absolutely no justification for the call on the Minister to resign,” he stressed.

Mr Adama also said the Minority’s criticisms offered an opportunity to examine the wider progress of Ghana’s communications sector, particularly considering what he called the “legacy issues” inherited from the previous NPP government led by Ursula Owusu-Ekuful.

This followed a Minority press conference on Thursday, October 2, where Sam George was accused of misleading Ghanaians and mishandling negotiations with MultiChoice.

According to the caucus, MultiChoice clarified that the supposed 30 percent reduction in DSTV prices was only a temporary promotion, not the outcome of negotiations.

Mr George’s conduct, the Minority argued, showed “poor judgment and a lack of candour.”

The caucus demanded three actions from the minister: an unqualified apology to Ghanaians, full disclosure of fines allegedly imposed on MultiChoice, and his resignation or dismissal by the President.
