Major fire engulfs commercial structures at Ability Square, Adjiringano

A fierce fire has reportedly erupted at Ability Square in the Adjiringano area of Accra, severely affecting several commercial structures in the densely populated enclave.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has launched a massive response operation to contain the blaze, which is threatening to cause significant property damage.

While the extent of the damage to any specific structure remains unconfirmed, the scale of the fire has necessitated an immediate, multi-station mobilisation.

In a swift and coordinated effort to prevent the blaze from spreading to adjacent properties, the GNFS has deployed a large contingent of personnel and equipment.

Four (4) fire pumps have been immediately dispatched to the scene from Legon, Madina, National Headquarters, and Adenta Fire Stations, highlighting the seriousness of the situation and the critical need for water and foam to subdue the raging fire.

Emergency personnel are currently battling the flames, with a primary focus on saving lives and preventing a major escalation in the commercial area.

This incident occurs against a backdrop of persistently high fire outbreaks across Ghana, which continue to inflict massive economic and social losses, particularly in commercial and residential areas of Accra.

The statistics from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) underscore the severe risk:

  • Surge in Incidents: Ghana recorded 3,595 fire incidents between January and June 2025 alone, marking a marginal increase of 0.53% over the same period in the previous year.
  • Property Losses: Despite GNFS efforts to protect assets, property destruction surged to an alarming GH₵188 million in the first half of 2025—more than triple the losses recorded in early 2024.
  • Primary Causes: Commercial and residential fires in Accra are frequently attributed to:
    • Electrical Faults: Often resulting from faulty or haphazard wiring, illegal connections, and the use of substandard electrical materials. Electrical issues account for a large portion of reported fire outbreaks.
    • Negligence/Human Error: This includes leaving cooking unattended (a common cause in commercial and market settings), the careless disposal of lit cigarettes or mosquito coils, and the misuse of gas cylinders, which can lead to explosions.

The recurring fires in congested commercial hubs like Ability Square highlight the urgent need for better adherence to fire safety protocols, proper electrical wiring installations, and effective crowd and access control for emergency services.
