Mahama's gov't committed to press freedom – Kwakye Ofosu reaffirms

The Minister of State for Government Communication, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to press freedom and open dialogue with the media.

He assured that recent efforts to regulate online discourse will not be used as a tool to suppress freedom of expression.

Speaking at the official launch of the 29th Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Media Awards and the inauguration of the Awards Committee at the Alisa Hotel in Accra, Mr Kwakye Ofosu clearified that the government, led by President John Dramani Mahama, remains steadfast in its respect for democratic values and media independence.

“Government does not intend to curb freedoms,” he said. “President Mahama, as you know him, is one person who supports the expression of free speech. He is exceptionally tolerant, and he is open to criticism.”

While acknowledging the vital role of free speech in a thriving democracy, the Minister also emphasised the need for responsible use of digital platforms.

He warned against the dangers of misinformation, incitement, and abuse in the online space.

“But he, as President and head of government, has the same responsibility as any leader anywhere, to ensure that our social fabric is not torn asunder by the abuse of this new platform,” he noted.

Mr Kwakye Ofosu was, however, categorical in his reassurance to journalists and media practitioners.

“We wish to assure you that even as we take steps to enforce law and order even as we take steps to clearly define the boundaries of this sort of practice we will not act in any way, shape or form that undermines press freedom, that hinders press freedom, or that curbs press freedom.”

He further reiterated government’s openness to dialogue with media stakeholders.

“We are open to dialogue, we are open to engagements with the media,” he said.
