The Member of Parliament (MP) for Abuakwa South, Kingsley Agyemang, has accused President John Dramani Mahama and his government of attempting to dismantle the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) through the introduction of the newly passed MahamaCare policy.
Speaking on JoyNews Prime on Monday, Mr Agyemang criticised the MahamaCare Bill, which was passed by Parliament under a certificate of urgency, describing it as a duplicative programme that risks creating unnecessary bureaucracy.
[embedded content]He argued that many of the chronic conditions targeted by MahamaCare, such as hypertension, diabetes, and other long-term illnesses, are already covered under the NHIS.
“We have to caution Ghanaians because it is disingenuous to take from an existing provision to finance another thing that can effectively be catered for under the primary provision, which is the National Health Insurance Law. So it is an attempt to create bureaucracy to collapse the National Health Authority or the scheme,” he said.
MahamaCare is a flagship health initiative introduced by the ruling NDC, aimed at providing free treatment for chronic diseases to vulnerable populations who struggle to access consistent medical care.
It was passed into law under an expedited process on Monday, July 22.
