Mahama urges newly sworn-in judges to uphold integrity and fairness

President John Dramani Mahama has reminded newly sworn-in High Court judges of the solemn duty they owe to the nation -to serve with integrity, courage, and fairness in the dispensation of justice.

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony held at the Jubilee House, President Mahama emphasised that the judicial oath was not a mere constitutional formality but a sacred commitment to the people of Ghana.

“The oaths you have taken are not a mere constitutional ritual,” the President said. “It is, in the words of the late Chief Justice Philip Acher, ‘a covenant between a judge and the people; a promise to rise above fear, favour and friendship, and to judge as conscience commands.’”

President Mahama noted that by taking the oath of office, the new judges had entered into that covenant with the people one that requires them to interpret the law with fairness, defend the weak with courage, and uphold the dignity of the Republic through integrity and service.

“Today, you enter that covenant with the people to interpret the law with fairness, defend the weak with courage, and uphold the dignity of our Republic through integrity and service,” he affirmed.

He further reminded the judges that public confidence in the judiciary rests on their conduct both on and off the bench, stressing that impartiality and moral fortitude were essential to maintaining the sanctity of justice.
