Former President John Mahama has called on Ghanaians to celebrate the remarkable unity of purpose that prevails among various religious organisations in the country.

Speaking at the 3rd National Conference of Regional Imams of Ghana held in Kumasi, he emphasised the importance of this unity by highlighting the discord and strife that often plague religious bodies in other nations.
“Let us express our deep gratitude to God for bestowing upon us the gift of shared purpose among our diverse religious communities,” Mahama declared passionately.

Drawing parallels between the teachings of Prophet Mohammed and Jesus Christ, he stressed their shared values of kindness and generosity. He firmly believes that if Ghanaians wholeheartedly follow in their footsteps, the nation would be free from many of its problems.

However, Mahama expressed concerns about the prevailing hypocrisy among believers in Ghana. He lamented the divisions and hatreds that persist within the religious community and urged religious leaders, particularly Imams, to guide their followers towards a path of unity, harmony, and a better life.

The former president acknowledged the financial challenges faced by many Imams and called upon both the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to put aside their political differences to improve the lives of these spiritual leaders.

Drawing a parallel with the support some pastors receive from Christian communities, Mahama underscored the importance of addressing this issue.

Mahama highlighted the economic challenges that Imams encounter, emphasizing that their suffering might far surpass that of politicians in urban areas. He urged the governing NPP to listen to these concerns and collaborate to enhance the living conditions of Imams.

Touching upon the political landscape, Mahama urged Ghanaians to uphold and respect the constitution. He cited instances in other countries where governments were overthrown due to instability and cautioned against similar occurrences. Instead, he urged citizens to work collectively towards the country’s development and progress.

Mahama emphasized the role of Imams in ensuring that parents take responsibility for their children’s education, addressing the issue of irresponsible parenting.

His speech resonated deeply with the audience, fostering a sense of unity and purpose among those in attendance.

As Ghana moves forward, the words of the former president serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of unity and collaboration among all its citizens, regardless of their religious affiliations.
