Mahama reiterates gov't’s commitment to expand Damongo Water Supply system

President John Mahama has reiterated his administration’s commitment to urgently expand the Damongo Water Supply system in the Savannah Region.

He underscored that the urgent completion and expansion of the Damongo Water Supply Project remains his number one priority.

“The hardship faced by residents due to lack of potable water is unacceptable in the 21st century,” President Mahama said during a courtesy call on him by the Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I, the Overlord of Gonjaland, at the Presidency in Accra.

“We will ensure the swift and sustainable delivery of clean water not only to Damongo but to surrounding communities, including Larabanga, Canteen and Busunu.”

The Yagbonwura’s historic visit to the Presidency was to congratulate President Mahama on his re-election in the December 7, 2024, general elections.

President Maham, together with Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, received the Yagbonwura and his entourage of Paramount chiefs at the forecourt of the Presidency.

President Mahama said as they promised in their manifesto during the 2024 general elections, they were committed to establishing regional hospitals in all six regions that were created.

He said they were committed to establishing a fully equipped Savannah Regional Hospital to be located in Damongo to serve as a referral centre for the region.

This, the President said, would complement the existing facilities at the West Gonja Hospital and be supported by improved ambulance services, accommodation, and health professionals.

Under roads and transport, the President said the Busunu-Daboya-Mankarigu Road would be upgraded and completed.

He said crucial corridors linking farming communities to promote trade and provide access to health and education would be constructed as well.

He noted that feeder roads across Central Gonja and North Gonja would also receive attention to facilitate movement and reduce post-harvest losses.

“I’m talking of the road from Yapei through Chama to Binjai and Salaga. This will link Central Gonja to Salaga, and that is one of the roads that will continue,” the President said.

He noted that the Government would put the bridge over that road so that they could open up that portion.

He said they were also already working on new bridges over the white Volta that would link Daboya directly to Tamale, adding that the work was progressing satisfactorily and that they were paying the contractor so that he could speed up the work.

He said other bridges being worked on included the Yapei and Buipe bridges.

“And for the districts in Savannah, we have announced 10 kilometres per year for district roads. And all the districts in Savannah have been captured among the 166 districts that are going to be covered,” the President said.

“And so every year, you get 10 kilometres of roads, and so for four years you get 40 kilometres of roads per district.”

President Mahama said the government had the Bole town roads noted and that finally they were going to do the Bole Chache road.

He said Sawla-Tuna-Kalba too was going to receive its fair share of roads.
