Mahama prioritising essentials, not extravagance – Kwakye Ofosu

Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has attributed Ghana’s recent economic challenges to what he termed fiscal recklessness under the former Akufo-Addo-led New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.

Speaking to journalists at the Africa–Singapore Business Forum on Monday, August 25, Mr Kwakye Ofosu argued that excessive spending by the previous government was a major factor in the country’s financial downturn.

“One of the problems that triggered the economic decline under the NPP was fiscal indiscipline – the tendency to live beyond our means and spend more than we earned,” he said.

He drew a contrast with the current administration under President John Mahama, stressing that it has exercised prudence in expenditure while channelling resources into essential areas.

“We are not spending beyond our means, we are not being extravagant. Our focus is on critical sectors,” he emphasised.

Mr Kwakye Ofosu also highlighted the government’s cost-cutting approach, citing the modest ministerial delegation to Singapore for the forum.

“Look at the delegation that came here – just three or four ministers of state. But if I show you the size of delegations that accompanied President Akufo-Addo on his travels, you would be astonished. All these things add up to the cost of running government,” he remarked.
