Mahama calls for judicial independence and accountability

President John Dramani Mahama has emphasised the crucial role of the judiciary in shaping Ghana’s legal landscape, investor confidence, human rights, and national stability during the swearing-in ceremony for new High Court judges.

Speaking at the event, President Mahama reminded the newly appointed judges that their judgements would not only influence Ghanaian jurisprudence but also have far-reaching impacts on the country’s democratic fabric and economic environment.

“Your judgement will not only shape our jurisprudence but also affect investor confidence, our human rights, and our national stability,” the President said.

Highlighting the importance of judicial independence, President Mahama described it as the “life blood” of Ghana’s democracy, stressing that it must never be compromised.

However, he pointed out that independence does not equate to isolation. The courts, he insisted, must remain open to accountability, transparency, and above all, fidelity to the Constitution of Ghana.

“Judicial independence is the lifeblood of our democracy, and it must never be compromised. But independence does not mean isolation. Courts must remain open to accountability, must be guided by transparency and fidelity to the Constitution of Ghana,” he stated.
