Mahama announces strict enforcement of weight limits for heavy-duty trucks

President John Mahama has announced that the government, in consultation with key stakeholders, will soon begin the strict enforcement of weight limitations for heavy-duty trucks.

He expressed concern about how overloaded vehicles contribute to the rapid deterioration of Ghana’s road network.

Speaking at a sod-cutting ceremony for the dualisation of the Takoradi–Cape Coast road under the Big Push initiative, the President stressed that strict adherence to axle-weight limits is crucial to preserving the country’s roads.

He noted that weak enforcement, limited weighbridge facilities, and tampering of equipment have enabled overloaded trucks to operate freely, resulting in costly damage and increased maintenance expenses.

President Mahama expressed optimism that the dualisation project would reduce travel time between Cape Coast and Takoradi by up to 50 percent. Although the project’s duration is estimated at 24 months, contractors have assured the government of early completion.
