Lumen Energy, Huawei sign MoU to deploy solar energy across 4000 Catholic institutions in Ghana

Lumen Energy, in partnership with Huawei Ghana, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the commencement of a nationwide solar energy initiative aimed at powering 4,000 catholic institutions in Ghana as part of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference Renewable Energy Project.

The MoU, signed at the National Catholic Secretariat in Accra on October 14, forms part of the Catholic Church’s strategic commitment to advancing renewable energy adoption and reducing carbon emissions in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Under the partnership, Huawei will serve as the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), supplying state-of-the-art solar energy solutions for deployment across all 4,000 Catholic Institutions.

Beyond equipment provision, Huawei will also deliver free capacity-building programs for installers, technicians and maintenance personnel, as a means of enhancing the skills of the youth in beneficiary dioceses.

The company will also provide continuous operational and technical support throughout the project life cycle.

Lumen Energy, a company owned by the National Catholic Secretariat, will spearhead the project implementation and oversee the commissioning activities to ensure seamless operational handover in collaboration with the beneficiaries of the Catholic Church of Ghana.

Speaking during the MoU signing ceremony, His Lordship Bishop Gabriel Edoe Kumordji, SVD, Board Chair of the Lumen Energy Company Limited, said, “This initiative is deeply rooted in the moral and spiritual call of the Church to care for creation.

“By embracing clean energy, we reduce our carbon footprint, protect the environment, and set a powerful example of faith in action.

“Furthermore, it will create sustainable jobs and build local capacity, especially for our young people, who will be trained to install, manage, and maintain these systems. It is a long-term investment in both people and the planet.”

Victor Awumee, CEO of Lumen Energy, reaffirmed his organisation’s dedication to delivering transformative initiatives as set out by the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference within the next 18 months at the earliest.

Bob Wang, Director of the Digital Power Business Department at Huawei Ghana, emphasised the company’s commitment to partnering with Lumen Energy in advancing a greener, more sustainable future for the Catholic Church and Ghana.

He highlighted that Huawei’s solar solutions feature robust performance capabilities, innovative safety systems, and proven sustainability credentials that will efficiently and reliably meet the energy demands of all 4,000 institutions.
