Lewis Hamilton visibly moved after securing his first Formula 1 victory in 57 races at the British Grand Prix, revealing he had contemplated leaving the sport since the contentious conclusion of the 2021 season.
The Mercedes driver, who clinched his record-extending 104th F1 win and a ninth triumph at Silverstone, expressed deep emotions during and after the race, shedding relief and joy.
“After such a difficult 2021, there were moments where I wanted not to continue,” Hamilton shared with Sky Sports F1. “To persist, to keep getting up and finally succeed, it’s the greatest feeling I can remember having.”
Hamilton acknowledged his challenges during his winless streak and the doubts that plagued him. “There were days I questioned whether I was still good enough or if I would ever return to winning ways,” he admitted, reflecting on his journey back to the podium’s top step.
The British driver, buoyed by the support of his team and fans, emphasized the importance of perseverance and the encouragement he received from those around him. “My team’s relentless effort and the unwavering support of my fans have been pivotal,” he said, grateful for their role in his resurgence.
Hamilton also spoke about the symbolic significance of his victory at Silverstone and the support he receives from his fans, describing their energy as a driving force in his career. He expressed gratitude towards his parents, who were present at the race, and the fans who have stood by him throughout his career.
Hamilton acknowledges the challenges as he continues to compete in F1 but remains motivated by the “glimpse of hope” and his commitment to inner peace, encapsulated by his motto, ‘Still, I Rise’.
The race at Silverstone not only marked a personal triumph for Hamilton but also underscored his resilience and determination to overcome adversity in pursuit of further success in Formula 1.
