Governs Kwame Agbodza

Minority Chief Whip, Governs Kwame Agbodza has urged stakeholders to work towards averting factors that would lead to the disruption of the country’s parliamentary democracy.

He stressed there are indications of a similar incidents – economic hardship, and corruption – that led to the toppling of Nkrumah’s government in 1966 and Busia’s government in 1972, truncating the first and second republics.

Addressing a public forum in Ho in commemoration of three decades of stable parliamentary democracy, he stressed that deliberate attempts must be made to quickly resolve the economic crisis, and curb corruption, among others.

“Mr. Speaker, as we observe Ghana’s 30 years of stable parliamentary democracy, it is essential to consider a portion of the issues that have brought about the transience of the initial three republics”, he said.

“Let us take into consideration our current economic challenges as we reflect and work toward a common objective to address what lies ahead. When the economy crashes, no one stands to gain. We cannot just stand by and not care.”

Mr. Agbodza stated that the Minority in Parliament remains resolute in holding the government accountable and would need the support and cooperation of other stakeholders.

“It appears that the oversight function of Parliament is basically kept for the Minority beyond the fact that the Minority are also seen as a trusted alternative to the government of the day. MPs from the Minority
side frequently question the government’s actions and omissions. MPs from the Minority side are the same ones who bring up important issues, demand responses, and hold the government accountable.

“This is surely a major responsibility for MPs on the Minority side. Therefore, in order for the Minority to hold the Government accountable, it needs the assistance and cooperation of civil society organisations, academic institutions, professional organisations, trade unions, students, and in fact every Ghanaian. It is through this that we can all partake in the processes of Parliament”, he said.
