Legal Green Association launches scholarship scheme for law students

The Legal Green Association (LGA) has launched a scholarship scheme aimed at supporting financially disadvantaged students at the Ghana School of Law.

The launch took place on Sunday, 7th December, 2025, at Maison Français, University of Ghana.

The event drew participants from the legal community, public service, and governance circles.

In her opening remarks, the LGA General Secretary, Emerentiana W. Alatinga, described the scheme as an important step for the Association, noting that its purpose is to give financially deprived students better access to legal education.

She expressed appreciation to individuals and groups who have supported the initiative.

The Founding Leader of the LGA and current CEO of Tema Oil Refinery, Edmond Kombat, Esq., commended the Association’s leadership for implementing the scheme.

He shared experiences from his own time at the Ghana School of Law and encouraged the LGA to ensure transparency and accountability in managing the fund.

Richard Nunekpeku, Esq., Deputy CEO of Goldbod, welcomed the initiative and urged students to pursue their ambitions with discipline and determination.

A Technical Advisor to the Commissioner-General of the GRA, Mrs Elsie Appau-Klu, Esq., described education and youth development as important long-term investments and urged responsible management of the scholarship fund.

A past leader of the LGA, Kabu Nartey, also acknowledged the efforts of the current administration in formalising the scheme.

He expressed gratitude to senior lawyers, including Edmond Kombat, Mr Edudzi Tamekloe, and Sammy Gyamfi, for their support during his tenure.

Abdul Fatah Maigah Mahama, Deputy Director-General of TVET, noted that many law students struggle financially and said the scheme would offer timely support.

Delivering the main address, Festus Matey traced the Association’s development since its formation in 2022.

He highlighted the LGA’s advocacy for the inclusion of professional law students in the Student Loan Trust Fund and ongoing efforts to secure pupillage placements with the Attorney-General’s Office, law firms, and public-sector legal departments.

He noted that the Attorney-General has offered internship opportunities for LGA members.

Matey described the scholarship scheme as the centrepiece of the LGA’s current initiatives, explaining that it aims to expand access, provide financial support, and strengthen mentorship for committed students.

In closing, Evans Mawunyo Tsikata, Head of Politics for the LGA, said the scholarship scheme aligns with the Association’s goal of ensuring that members are not deprived of legal education due to financial constraints.

He encouraged new members to uphold the Association’s values and said the LGA would continue working with state agencies, law firms, the SRC, and other partners to broaden professional opportunities for students.
