President John Dramani Mahama

The Legal Green Association of Ghana (LGA), a left-wing association of law students, has commended President John Dramani Mahama for what it describes as a courageous and morally upright address at the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Association said President Mahama distinguished himself by speaking truth to power at a time when many world leaders are silent in the face of injustice.

Quoting the President’s remarks – “The crimes in Gaza must stop. It doesn’t matter what you call it: if it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, well then… it must be a duck” – the LGA noted that his words will “echo for generations to come,” describing them as a fearless indictment of global inaction.

The Association stressed that Ghana, which has historically stood on the side of liberation struggles, Pan-African unity, and global peace, cannot afford to be a “mute spectator to genocide, regardless of which global power stands behind it.”

While acknowledging Minority concerns about Ghana’s traditional neutral stance in international conflicts, the Association argued that neutrality should not mean silence in the face of grave humanitarian crises.

“Speaking out on such issues can enhance our moral authority, as long as it aligns with our commitment to peace and international law,” the statement said.

The LGA also praised former Finace Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, for what it described as balanced and honest commentary on the issue, noting that he showed maturity by recognising President Mahama’s leadership on the global stage while constructively addressing domestic challenges.

The group warned against political “fence-sitters and apologists for colonial masters,” insisting that Ghana’s legacy must remain one of “courage, conviction, and justice.”

It called on civil society organisations, religious bodies, academic institutions, and citizens of conscience worldwide to rise above political affiliations and amplify the message that “the crimes in Gaza must stop.”

“We are proud to have a leader who dares to speak, who dares to stand where others have fallen silent, and who dares to hold the powerful accountable when others cower in fear. President Mahama did not only represent Ghana; he represented humanity.”

The release was jointly signed by Festus Matey, Leader of the Legal Green Association, and Evans Mawunyo Tsikata, Head of Politics and Elections Affairs, LGA.
