Kumasi Technical University lecturer Dr. Samuel Afriyie has cautioned that Ghana’s opposition New Patriotic Party will pursue political retribution when returning to power, following the arrest of Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako.
Speaking after Chairman Wontumi’s release on GHS50 million bail from Economic and Organised Crime Office custody, Afriyie alleged politically motivated targeting.
“I pity young NDC politicians. They will suffer revenge,” Afriyie stated, specifically naming legislators Sammy Gyamfi, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and Sam George as future targets.
Afriyie characterized Wontumi’s detention for alleged fraud and money laundering as “heartless” and “humiliating,” reflecting broader NPP concerns about state institutions targeting opposition figures. The arrest follows investigations into former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta and NPP Adenta chairman Kumi.
“Any NPP leader calling for future sympathy won’t be forgiven by grassroots,” Afriyie warned, asserting the incident constituted “an attack on the spirit and pride of our party.” The remarks intensify partisan tensions amid ongoing corruption probes involving officials from both major parties. Ghana’s political climate remains volatile as investigations proceed against high-profile opposition members.
