The Ghana Education Service (GES) has confirmed that the surviving students from the tragic canoe accident at Lawra Senior High School are currently receiving psychological and emotional support on campus.

According to a GES press release signed by Daniel Fenyi, Head of Public Relations, the incident occurred on Saturday, June 14, 2025.

As part of a routine morning cadet exercise, ten second-year students boarded a canoe to cross the Black Volta River near Dikpe. The canoe tragically capsized, resulting in the deaths of seven students (five girls and two boys), while three others survived the ordeal.

“While investigations are ongoing, the surviving cadet members are currently on campus receiving psychological and emotional support,” stated the GES in its declaration.

In collaboration with the Regional and District Directors of Education, the school administration is coordinating efforts to care for the psychological well-being of the survivors. Although the GES did not dispatch external mental health specialists, experienced school counselors and trusted staff are leading the support initiative.

The Service emphasized its commitment to bolstering safety measures and ensuring a secure learning environment. “We assure the general public, especially parents and guardians, that Lawra SHS remains a safe learning environment,” the statement reassures, while investigations proceed.

The GES also pledged to continue offering support to the families of the victims, as well as to the school community. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families, the Lawra SHS community, and all affected by this heartbreaking tragedy,” concluded the press release.

As the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident continues, the school remains focused on healing, mourning, and safeguarding the welfare of its students.
