High Court Judge, Justice Dorinda Smith Arthur, is urging leaders to use their legal expertise for the greater good, rather than wielding it as a tool to exploit and oppress vulnerable members of society.

She entreats aspiring lawyers to uphold fairness and integrity as their guiding principles, cautioning that compromising on ethics undercuts the entire legal system.

She expects the next generation of legal professionals to use their expertise to serve the greater good.

The legal system, over the years, has been marred with the inability to serve deprived societies.

High Court Judge, Justice Dorinda Smith Arthur, addressing law students at the KNUST, cautioned against serving personal interests.

“If you compromise on ethics, the entire legal system suffers. Therefore, let’s fairness and integrity be your guiding principles. In your study setting of law, know that the law is not a weapon for the powerful to work against the weak.

“The law is a bridge that connects the societies, that turns chaos is the order, and protects the rights of the vulnerable. As future, I urge you to be bridge builder, not demolition experts. Do not use the law to serve only your interests,” she said.

The High Court Judge was addressing the 4th induction and award ceremony of the Faculty of Law, KNUST.

The 2024/2025 academic year batch of students admitted to pursue a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) have been inducted into the Faculty of Law.

The induction ceremony will enable them to officially hold themselves as students and begin academic studies toward achieving a bachelor’s degree in law.

The induction ceremony conducted by the Kumasi High Court Judge, Justice Hannah Taylor emphasised the duty that comes with the pursuit of legal education and the law profession.

The Vice-Chancellor of KNUST, Prof. Rita Akosua Dickson, congratulated the newly admitted students, urging them to embrace the rigorous academic journey ahead with commitment and resilience.

She reaffirmed the university’s dedication to providing a conducive environment for academic excellence and holistic professional development.

“Please be reminded that the study of law, just like any other profession and passion, requires personal discipline. That is, staying focused on your studies and keeping to personal, as well as the institution’s rules for your academic success and excellence.

“Once you do that, then we have no doubt for sure that you are going to be more than capable of excelling on this journey as you persevere and work hard to overcome many challenges that you may encounter in the course of your legal studies. And of course, we agree to the fact that challenges are also part of life. Once you embrace these and look for the solutions, asking the relevant questions, being at the right place at the right time, you will be fine,” she said.
