Constituency executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Kusaug Traditional Area have condemned what they describe as a “state-sponsored assault” on civilians and traditional symbols in Bawku.
At a press conference on Tuesday, July 15, representatives from Binduri, Bawku Central, Pusiga, Tempane, and Zebilla constituencies expressed outrage over a violent incident on July 13, which they claim involved armed individuals of Mamprusi origin allegedly escorted by the military.
According to the executives, the attackers not only inflicted harm on civilians but also burned the statue of the Bawku Naba, an act they described as a direct attack on the cultural heritage of Kusaug.
“The people of Kusaug woke up to what can only be described as a state-sponsored assault—not only on civilians but on the very soul and authority of our traditional leadership,” the group stated.
While acknowledging the long-standing complexity of the Bawku conflict, the NDC leaders rejected what they termed the use of indiscriminate force by state-backed actors.
“We do not condone any violence, but no civilised or lawful state responds by attacking innocent women and schoolchildren in various schools and injuring two of them. This is not law enforcement—it is state terrorism,” they declared.
The executives warned that tensions in the area were at a breaking point. “Let it be known that the Kusaug people have reached their limit,” they said, calling on the government to ensure justice, accountability, and the protection of innocent lives.
The press conference adds to growing concerns over the deteriorating security situation in Bawku, where repeated clashes have undermined efforts to restore peace.
