A Krobo-based youth and advocacy organisation, Kloma Hengme, has announced plans to stage a protest on Thursday, 24th July 2025, over the prolonged neglect of the Somanya–Kpong Highway project.

In a statement to announce the planned protest, the group voiced deep frustration over the apparent lack of commitment from both local and national authorities in addressing the deteriorating state of the road.

The route, though short in distance, is considered critical as it connects thousands of residents in the Yilo and Lower Manya Krobo municipalities to key economic and social facilities.

Kloma Hengme revealed that the stretch had been incorporated into the broader Nkurakan–Trom road project via an official addendum issued by the Ministry of Roads and Highways and awarded to General Construction Ltd.

Construction reportedly commenced in July 2024, but has since stalled, allegedly due to the erstwhile government’s failure to honour payment obligations.

The group lamented that the abandoned road now poses serious risks, with “thick dust, deep potholes, and dangerous conditions” becoming a daily burden for commuters, schoolchildren, health workers, and traders.

The group stated that it had engaged the Municipal Chief Executives of Yilo Krobo and Lower Manya Krobo approximately six weeks ago and was assured of the new government’s intention to resume works.9k=

However, no definitive timeline was provided. In response, Kloma Hengme issued a four-week ultimatum, which expired on 3rd July, without any indication of progress or return to the site by the contractor.

“Kroboland cannot wait in perpetuity. For the past seven months, residents have suffered unbearable hardship and trauma,” the statement read.

By the Public Order Act, Kloma Hengme has formally notified the Ghana Police Service of its intention to hold the protest, via a letter dated 7th July 2025.

The planned demonstration will begin at the Somanya Roundabout and conclude at the Lower Manya Krobo Municipal Assembly premises in Odumase-Krobo.

The group has issued a clarion call to traditional authorities, youth associations, civil society groups, and the general public across the Krobo enclave to join the protest, which it says is aimed at drawing urgent national attention to what it sees as a long-standing pattern of infrastructural neglect in Krobo communities.
